Summer Part 1

The kids went back to school today, which seems wild as it is only mid August! However, they've switched schools and their new school follows the Swiss calendar. Our schedule this year will be busier than ever so I thought I should write about summer while it is still fresh in my mind!

The weather at the start of summer was dreadful: humid with torrential rain and thunderstorms. We were fortunate not to be impacted in the same way as many German towns. We decided to get away for a few days (in pursuit of sunshine) and settled on Locarno, Ticino. It was such a good decision (thanks Sam!) and so wonderful. We went for a hike each morning and saw some incredible places: the Verzasca Dam from the Goldeneye movie, the beautiful Ponte dei Salti and beautiful waterfalls.

Ascona ^ was such a fun place to go for dinner. It was really buzzing! We had a wonderful dinner at Osteria Nostrana which was delicious. There's no reservation so we had to wait a little while but it was so worth it. The view over the lake is lovely and the food is fab!

We did a 10km hike along this river and it was the most incredible turquoise. The water is glacial and famously cold (it hurt my feet to stand in the water for more than a few seconds!) but the kids had a little paddle and play.

Sam had a work to do so most afternoons the children and I would hang out by the hotel pool. They had a wonderful time playing in the water and I got to relax with my Kindle and catch up on my reading! We could have stayed all summer but it was wonderful to get back to Basel and find out that grandma was coming to visit! After a whole year apart, the kids were SO SO SO excited to hop on the train to meet her at Zurich airport!
